Eastern Cape 4×4 Trails
Eastern Cape 4×4 trails are as diverse as the province itself. The adventure province has lent it well to the Four Wheel Drivers of the Eastern Cape. Trail variety is as diverse as the area.
4×4 Africa is asking the “4WD community” to contact us with updates or add more trails to the ever growing list of existing Eastern Cape 4×4 trails. We welcome all trails; be it commercially operated paid trails, a scenic dirt road or a few bog holes… Follow this link to contact us.

Four Wheel Driving in the Eastern Cape
Although The Eastern Cape’s claim to be the “The destination of choice for the Adventurous” may well be true, it does not have as many 4×4 trails as the Western Cape. In fact, the Eastern Cape has relatively few 4×4 trails, and they vary from sedate and rather pedestrian, to rugged and demanding, particularly in the mountainous regions in the west. However, in a general sense, the 4×4 trails in the Eastern Cape offer better opportunities for game viewing, since the 4×4 trails here are more frequently in areas with better visibility.
Karroo Heartland
Typical of the Karroo, this region is dotted with well-known towns like Cradock, Somerset East, Aberdeen, Graaff-Reinet, Steytlerville, and Pearston, and is mostly flat, but punctuated by dramatic mountain ranges. Many 4×4 trails in the Karroo Heartland, particularly in the Camdeboo Mountain area where the Camdeboo National Park offers a challenging 4×4 trail over both steep and flat terrain, are a mix of steep, rocky, and easier flat terrain, where the main attraction is game, and/or flower viewing, which is its own reward. However, Karroo Heartland 4×4 trails are always extremely scenic, if not always challenging. There is relatively little sand in the Karroo regions, but mud is plentiful during the wet season.
Frontier country
Apart from being mountainous, the Frontier Country with Grahamstown at its centre, and towns like Adelaide, Alicedale, Alice, Bedford, Fort Beaufort, Peddie, Riebeeck East, Salem, and Sidbury dotted around, also happens to be the point of convergence for four major weather systems, a circumstance that can turn any 4×4 trail in this area from a walk in the park, into an obstacle course in a matter of a few hours.
In Frontier Country, the 4×4 trails vary from steep, rocky, and challenging, especially in the Baviaanskloof, to the 4×4 trail at Humansdorp close to the coast, with loose, thick sand and which is generally regarded as extremely difficult and challenging, with a grading of three to five. Having recovery gear on hand for this trail is highly recommended.
Wild coast
What the Wild Coast lacks in “normal” 4×4 trails, it amply makes up for with the “Wild Coast Eco Trail”. Although not an official 4×4 trail, and thus having no difficulty grading, this 450km, six-day adventure on sometimes near impassable tracks require a proper 4×4 with diff locks, low range and plenty of recovery gear. Although it is possible to complete this “trail” with a soft roader, it is not recommended during the wet season, which is during the summer months. This trail is best attempted by parties with more than one 4WD vehicle, and an official guide.
Sunshine coast
Stretching from Tsitsikamma to East London, and reaching as far inland as Grahamstown, the towns of Jeffreys Bay, Port Alfred, and St Francis are only a few of the more iconic Sunshine Coast towns. The mountainous areas around Grahamstown, and in particular the Addo Elephant National Park, offer rocky trails with some steep gradients, a few minor water crossings, and slippery conditions on mud and grass during rain or snow falls. Coastal areas are mostly sandy with some twisting forest trails, although the area around Port Elizabeth offers trails with all the classical elements of a good 4×4 trail, with some trails in this area having grade four statuses.
Tsitsikamma
Stretching from the Bloukrans River in the west, to the Eerste River in the east along the coast, the area offers 4×4 trails with steep gradients on the Tsitsikamma Mountain range, rocks in riverbeds, sand on the coast, and mud on indigenous forest trails. In the Langkloof area, the deep soils offer mud, some sand, smaller rock obstacles, and more mud in the wet season.
Although the Eastern Cape is arguably the second most diverse province in terms of geology and scenery, it is also the second poorest province in economic terms, and it has without doubt the most extensive network of dirt and gravel roads in South Africa, with surfaces that vary from very good, to those resembling obstacle courses. Gravel roads are often as much fun – and as demanding – as any off-road trail and using them is generally free.
However, travelling on the back roads can be difficult, with as many dirt roads and routes, as there are places to go. However, any back road can be closed without warning for any number of reasons, which means you might well be marooned, or lost many kms from any form of help. The foolproof way to tackle back road driving is to engage a route planner, who will work out each day’s driving distances, establish GPS waypoints, make accommodation bookings, check and confirm road conditions and closures, and the like, while keeping to your intended itinerary as far as is possible.
