Gauteng 4×4 Trails
Gauteng have the most Four Wheel Drive vehicles per square km, and also most likely more 4×4’s than any other province too. Luckily for the local community, Gauteng 4×4 Trails are plentiful and all within an hour of two’s drive. The quality of trails and facilities are of a high standard too. However, us low range dirt pilots are always on the look for a new challenge. Please contact us with any corrections to existing trails and add more to the list. We welcome all trails; be it commercially operated paid trails, a scenic dirt road or a few bog holes… Follow this link to contact us.

Four-Wheel driving in Gauteng
Although Gauteng has isolated pockets of stunningly beautiful scenery, and arguably more 4×4 vehicles on its roads than any other province, this diminutive province does not have much to offer the off-road tourist in the way of off-road driving opportunities. Its small surface area, high level of economic development, and high population density does not allow for the huge open areas needed for 4×4 trails, or other off-road tourism activities, apart from barely a handful of official off-road trails: one in Pretoria at Groenkloof, one very good one at Henley-on-Klip, and a few at Bronkhorstspruit in the far north, which is in a particularly scenic area. Nor does Gauteng have a significant network of dirt and gravel roads: in fact, apart from a few farm roads that are frequently monitored and patrolled for security reasons, Gauteng has virtually no dirt roads that connect one point to any other point, except for those in a few nature reserves.
However, the few off-road trails that Gauteng does possess have it all: thick, loose sand, wet clayey soils, lots of mud, rocky areas, and a few water crossings with mud and/or sandy bottoms, gravel, steep gradients and in one case, a grade four rating.
Southern Gauteng
The 14 km-long trail at Henley-on-Klip is best described as challenging, as it has a grade four rating with extremely difficult rocky sections, deep-ish water crossings, deep ruts, and narrow muddy tracks between large trees, steep rocky and muddy gradients, and a few sand sections. However, the most difficult parts of the trail have escape routes for less experienced drivers. A full day off-road driving training course is also available.
Northern Gauteng
Set in the Groenkloof Nature reserve, this 14 km-long circular is not particularly challenging, and takes barely two hours to complete, even though it has some shallow water crossings, a few steep gradients, and a little mud. However, what it lacks in obstacles it makes up for with the striking mountainous scenery.
Far Northern Gauteng
The area around Bronkhorstspruit in the far north offers off-road training on a complex of 12 obstacles courses through the very scenic eastern-most parts of the Magaliesberg range on trails varying from 1.4km to 8kms in length. However, these trails are only for proper 4×4’s with low range and good ground clearance. Some of the obstacles here include 300 hill starts, narrow log bridges, side slopes, sand, mud, deep ruts and gullies, water crossings, and steep gradients on a variety of surfaces.
